Failure

Artist Statement:

My idea for my interpretation of the word “failure” was inspired by a quote by Thomas Edison. He claimed,  “I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.” Failing can hinder you from wanting to try again.  Failing again and again can lower your self esteem, and hinder you from wanting to try again.  However, failure can also be a good thing.  Failure brings you one step closer to succeeding.  You are able to find your flaw and fix it the next time you attempt it.

A prime example of never giving up is Thomas Edison when inventing the light bulb. Thomas Edison's teachers said he was "too stupid to learn anything." He was fired from his first two jobs for being "non-productive." Edison made 1,000 unsuccessful attempts before creating a successful light bulb.  Now, the light bulb is used in almost every aspect of daily life thanks to the hard work and dedication of one man.

I chose to idealize the determination of Thomas Edison by capturing a photo with a working light bulb as the only light in the photo.  The process behind creating this photo evolved around the single light source in the photograph. The light from the light bulb brings some of the darkness out of the photograph.  The darkness in this photograph represents failure, but the light of the light bulb takes away some of that failure. The light also shows the dark circles, and marks upon the subjects face.  This demonstrates the hard work and determination presented by the individual to be successful.

This photograph represents me because I work hard to achieve success in school, sports, and within life in general.  I study hard for tests, I practice hard on the field, and I never give up.  I may make mistakes along the way but that never deters me from working hard, and trying to improve.
