Artist Statement:

 

The idea behind this photo was inspired by the word, “Irony.” I wanted to portray the idea of technology corrupting the intelligence of society.  When people spend their time aimlessly texting or playing games with their technology, they are wasting the time that could have been spent on activities that they enjoy. For example, you could spend your time participating in extracurricular activities like sports, or a club, rather than watching irrelevant videos on your cell phone.

My process behind shooting this photograph was trying to make the illusion that the apple was charging the iPhone.  This is the main factor that makes my photograph ironic because the actual apple is appearing to be charging an Apple product, like an iPhone. I downloaded a picture online of a home screen that was charging so that when I plugged the phone cord into the apple, it would make it look as though the apple was charging the iPhone.  The apple has lost its reddish glow because all of the knowledge from the apple is being used to charge the iPhone. An apple is symbolic of education and learning, so when people are aimlessly using their technology, there are losing their intelligence.

This photograph is eye-opening for me to see how much technology has changed society. Now, everything within society is done electronically.  Letters used to be sent to show thanks and appreciating toward someone, but now, just a simple text has replaced a heartfelt letter.  Technology is making people less intelligent as shown in the photograph.  The apple is taking its power, and using it to charge the iPhone.  The apple is a symbol of education and learning, but its power is being used for technology and thus being wasted.
