Legacy

Artist Statement:

The idea behind this photograph was inspired by the word “legacy.”  Adjusting your habits to help better the environment is something that in the long run could make a large difference on the world. The environment needs to be protected.  We as humans often take our planet for granted and don’t think about how negatively little things like littering, and not recycling could impact our planet in the long run. Legacy is “the mark” that you make on the world.  Big or small, every change makes a difference and has the potential to change the world. This environmental movement has inspired me to create a photo that idealizes the aspects of how one person can make an impact on the world for yourself, and for future generations to come.

The process behind creating this photograph began with the chalk drawing of the earth. The small chalk drawn earth and the person standing in the majority of the earth shows that one person can make a large mark on the earth.  Even though it is just one person, they are covering half of the earth with shows how much of a difference just one person can make.  The face of the subject standing inside the earth is not revealed to highlight that you may not always be praised or well know for the attributes that you added to making the earth a better place.  However, your ideals and habits will be passed on.  The 12 year old boy drawing the earth is showing that the mark left by the subject standing inside the earth has been reflected on him. The younger subject is used to symbolize younger generations and their ability to carry on important environmental ideals throughout their generation and beyond.  This symbolism is used to show that the little changes to help the environment can make a significant difference to the world through time and effort put in by your generation and future generations to come.

This photograph is used as a wake up call for myself to start to get involved more in saving the earth.  The earth is our home, and it is important to me that we as humans do all we can to protect the earth, not damage it.
