The idea behind this photograph was inspired by the word “opposite.”  The idea originally came to me when I saw a picture on Flickr that was an optical illusion between the front view and the profile view of a person's face. The optical illusion differentiates the features of a person's face, and what lies behind the face. The idea behind this specific technique in editing helps highlight the different personalities in twins, even though their facial features may be similar.

Often times with twins, people believe that because they look alike that they have similar interests, and that they enjoy doing the same things. However, being a twin, I know for a fact that that is not always the case.  My sister Caitlin and I are fraternal twins, so we do not look exactly alike.  However, people will still often think of us as one person when in reality, we are two different people with different hobbies and dreams. The photograph physically separates the two of us and highlights the unique features that define us as separate individuals.

The process behind creating this photo began with taking a profile and front faced photo of both my sister and I. By masking the front face photo onto the profile view, and switching the front nose to the profile nose, an optical illusion was created.  The picture appears to be two faces depending on how you look at the face.  The two edited faces of my sister and I highlight our differences, and aids in differentiating us.
